Whether painting, printmaking or sculpture, making pieces often involves several processes. Here are some recent and new works in progess in the studio in south east London.

Twenty seconds - oil on panel 2024. Wood panel selection, cleaning and preparation of panels with clear gesso, building of paint layers following photographs taken on site.

Roof January 2021 - oil on wood panel. The age, texture and joins in the panels provide a complementary base on which to paint, reflecting the shape and aging fragility of the roof.

Cloudburst, Isle of Sheppey - Oil on ply panels. Painting progress in the rapidly changing studio winter light.

Twenty Seconds - Screenprint on Somerset White. Images show preparation of the screen with the exposed image, mixing ink, registration process on the printing bed, trying different papers, new prints drying, the tearing down area at Thames Side Studios, and the final piece.

Rotate (squares) - Etching on Somerset White. Here the process of inking up the etching plate (zinc), wiping down the plate and printing on pre soaked etching paper is shown. It can take an hour to produce each print. Also shown is the plate being etched in a bath of ferric chloride and the stopping out process where parts of the image are covered to limit the etching solution exposure. Below is a short film clip of the plate going through the press in my studio.

Fold (Study in white) - acrylic on linen 2023. Canvas selection, canvas stretching and priming over adapted timber stretchers, colour mixing, painting delicate minimalist washes and the final piece.

Fall (squares) - stainless steel and rust. Building the framework for the steel pieces, composition ready for immersing in rusting solution, and the rusting process.

40 seconds Glen Etive - Oil on paper. Building the layers of oil to capture the rapidly moving clouds and shadows. Here is a short film of the painting of the first underlayer. The white paper has had a wash in a mid earth tone before the underdrawing.
